Paul has inspired me to put together an epic ride that will take those who are stupid enough to come along with me this summer from Boise to McCall using dirt roads. I know of a few people who have done it. I am working with them to get their routes and figure this all out. My guess it will take a couple of days and we will have to figure out support. I just wanted to post this to get an idea of who would be interested. It would be MT or cross bike ridding. Once I figure out how to put in the route in a map I will upload it. Lots of fun. This will be done sometime in late July or August.
There is the route I got from Mike Cooley.
Stats:
211.2 Miles
22402 Elevation Gain
19970 Elevation Loss
Day 1: Home to Garden Valley
Day 2: Garden Valley to Warm Lake
Day 3: Warm Lake to Dennings
you're looking for stupid? sign me up!
This sounds great. Last year I was trying to plan a cross ride from here to my girl's summer camp in Garden Valley. I think I had a reasonable route planned, but I couldn't get the logistics nailed down quickly enough. Anyway, I'm interested. It all depends on the schedule and if I need to figure out any extra vacation days.
Yea I'm stupid too
I think it would be a blast - and requires no gas money to get to the starting point. I would be interested, and my son would probably like to go as well. Just depends on dates. July would be better than August for me - Break out the maps.
Sounds like you need a
Sounds like you need a cameraman to document such an epic adventure! I am SO in!
Ditto
Sounds like a blast! Would depend on the timing and how much vacation I have. Otherwise put me on the list!
Book it
My July is fairly jacked up... How does Aug 2-5th, 16-19th or 23-26th work for people? We could end the adventure with a party at our place in McCall and either spend a night if we get there on Sat or at least use it to shower up on Sun before heading home.
Harris: http://ridewithgps.com works really well. Plug it in there, or just shoot me what you've got and I can do it for you quickly.
Nate: mukluk's are allowed, you're in.
We'll definitely be traveling thru hot spring territory... I'd suspect some stops to soak in primitive pools along the way would add to the epicness of the trip nicely.
Make it so!
Now Eric has thrown in hot pools, a final party, and showers? Yeah, it's ON!
As far as I know, any of those dates would work for me.
Anytime in July
Do you have any July suggestions - my August is pretty well booked.
Full
My July is full other than the last weekend. But that's the four summits ride and was hoping to do it this year. It could also be a scouting mission, as I'm pretty sure the miles line up for an overnight near warm lake.
Aug
August works better for me as well.
Stupid is as Stupid Does
I'm with you fellers. Count me in. If we REALLY want to make it epic, let's make it a night ride.
What Matt Said
Minus the lights thing. I would like to see my family again after we say goodbye. : )
Support Vehicles?
Would we need to have a support drop our camping stuff or would be haul it? Still in BTW. We'll have to get clever with batteries for a 3 day film, but I like it.
Support is mandatory
I think with the distance we're talking over dirt and big climbs... Support is def required to at least haul our gear to the sites. This could be the more difficult part of making this thing work. Who's going to dare to be first to volunteer their spouse? :)
Agreed
Agreed with Eric.. Because of the distance and time of year I think having a water refill partway through the day would be nice.
Planning meeting
Okay, so it's really an effort to get B-reel video and set the stage for the production, but can we organize a meeting at some cool pizza place to discuss the details, point at a map, and talk about it all? I think it would be fun.
If By "Some Cool Pizza Place" You Mean McKinlay's Backyard... :)
I'll gladly host the pizza party if people don't mind waiting for warmer weather, like April or something?
Yeah!
Sounds great to me. I've been waiting for a chance to see that oven in action!
Perfect
We should lock in a date before then. if we wait until April to lock in our date we won't get going. Summers fill up way to fast.
I agree. Let's get a date.
I agree. Let's get a date.
How About...
Thursday, April 19th? Meet at six?
Booked.
Sounds good, it's on my calendar.
When we going?
Now to set the ride dates. Any preference with the ones I posted?
Late August Best
Late August works best for me. The 23rd - 26th range you threw out has my vote.
Late August is harder...
For us teacher-types who sit back, relax, sip beverages with little umbrellas in them, the last week of August is problematic. They actually make us WORK around that time. A little earlier would be better.
The Joys
Oh the Joys of making this work. Pretty much any time in August I can probably make work So you guys can hash this out.
Hash Tag
How about August 9 - 12? My sons' birthdays are on 8/2 and 8/16, which makes those dates difficult for me to be away...
Or, how about July 26 - 29?
This could be tough
Summer's are always tough it seems... Aug 9-12 another guy in the office has already scheduled being gone, so I was trying to avoid. July 26-29 may work... the only reason I was avoiding it was that it's the 4 summits ride, and I was hoping that one would be our reconnaissance ride into the warm lake area.
Date Set
Looks like August 2-4 is our game plan.
This looks cool, I could
This looks cool, I could probably swing August 2-4th for this. Bill did this ride and said one of the mtn climbs was just killer. Not sure what bike to ride, have to think about it some more.
Day 2
I believe he told me that was the beginning of day 2. It all looks really hard but a blast.
