Look out and stay safe!

I was riding South tonight on Eagle road just about to go straight through the intersection at Eagle and Chinden when a driver in a Mustang decided to try a right turn in front of me. I plowed into the quarterpanel behind the right rear wheel and went down hard on the pavement. Luckily I had arm warmers on or my left arm would have been scraped up pretty good. I got a minor scrape on my left knee. The main damage so far is that my lower left back is pretty sore. I'm icing it tonight. Hopefully it isn't too sore and stiff in the morning. I want to get back out on the road!

The gal who hit me told the officer that she thought I was turning right and the sun made it hard for her to see me. Interesting that she was heading south and the sun sets in the west! The accident happened just before 7pm so it was plenty light. I think her mistake was a common one. Many motorists get impatient around cyclists and worry they will slow them down too much. So they are willing to take risks in an attempt to get ahead of a cyclist rather than showing a little patience and waiting for them to pass before turning. They also underestimate the speed the bikes move at and don't realize that they have to slow down to approximately the same or slower speed than the bikes to make the turn.

Based on where I landed in the intersection I deduced that the motorist had swung way wide on the right turn. Probably because she realized how close it was and was trying to avoid the collision.

Not sure if there is a message to this story. One for the motorists out there is to be more careful around cyclists. One for cyclists is to remember that cars will always win in a collision. Who cares about right-of-way. The cyclist will always lose that battle! So do everything you can to stay safe. I don't think I could have avoided this collision. But it makes me want to be even more aware when I ride.

Glad you are o.k.

Wow, just a little reminder how vulnerable we are out there. I hope you are up to speed soon.

Wow!

Dan, that's crazy! I hope you're okay and back in the saddle soon.

Now the second most important question: How's the bike? :)

Thankful

So glad to hear you were not hurt more severely. Thanks for taking the time to share it. A good lesson for us all.

OUCH!

Wow, I'm really glad to hear you're OK and hope you're feeling better today Dan! I'm also wondering about your rig... did it escape unharmed? If so, I hope it at least left a mark on that Mustang. Did she get a citation? It doesn't sound like it, which is of course disappointing, but maybe she did. I should start running the helmet cam around town in normal traffic... I'm sure some video would really help tell the story.

More details

I've run it through my mind since last night. And I was riding with someone from work who was behind me and saw it happen. So I talked to her this morning and she confirmed what I was thinking.

I'm pretty sure the first contact was my front wheel. Which turned my bike sideways and immediately launched me into the side of the car. At first I thought the bike might be toast because when I picked it up I couldn't spin the rear wheel. But then realized the wheel had roated sideways into the left brake when the bike turned sideways and I was able to loosen and reseat it and it looks to spin true. So the bike is good.

I woke up very sore in my lower left back and butt area. So I'm pretty sure I took almost all the impact there. I have a few other minor scrapes that probably came when I landed on the pavement. But my momentum was absorbed by the car. I didn't see it, but one of the eyewitnesses who stopped to help said there was a dent in the side of the car about the diameter of a basketball. So that must be where I hit it.

The police officer met me later after they checked me out at the hospital. He said they gave the driver two citations. I'm not sure what for. But it was pretty blatant so I'm glad she got something.

Overall I fell lucky. I have some pain medication and muscle relaxants to take. In a few days I'll be itching to ride again...

Just Passed You

Wow Dan, I had just passed you and the other rider you were with! I am glad you are for the most part ok.

Just wanted to add that I have had several near death experiences on eagle rd with people turning left and not judging my speed. So make sure everyone, that you watch those cars turning left and anticipate them doing something dumb. I even had a guy do a rolling stop, staring right at me, or at least through me, (he was turning right) to check traffic. He decided to gun it right as I passed in front of him and it was my arm bouncing off his hood that caused him to hit the skids and luckily I did not go down. But it scared me to death. I am about ready to truck the bike to eagle and then begin riding.

Glad you are OK!

Crazy!

Thats really scary Dan. Great to hear she got something for her stupidity and that you and the bike will live to ride another day. Lets all be extra safe out there!
