I have an idea I woulod like to throw out and see who else is interested. Harris and I were talking and it looks like Eagle Island needs to have it's annual goathead removal completed. I also know that a lot of people like to spend Monday's with their families. What if we went to Eagle Island with our famlies, rakes, and shovels and did a short service project and then cooled down with a fun refreshing swim and maybe some food? Let me know what you think.
good times
Sounds fun. Let's do it. I think we're good for the 14th, but will run it by Jamie.
Labor Day
I believe it is going to be on Labor Day. If we wait another entire week it will be too take. We will have missed the pre goat head plants. Right now they haven't started to harden up so if we can do it within the next few days we can make it a lot easier.
What time on Labor Day
I think that would work for me for a while, not sure what else has been planned yet. What time were you thinking?
Morning
I can't go at night because my family will be coming back into town. Morning would work best for me. I might head out there on Saturday as well just to look over the course again and try to figure out any changes for the year. They have done some revisions to the park that I noticed. Brad can you head out there any time this weekend? Friday through Monday?
Saturday Morning
This works fine for me, what time, late enough that I can maybe sleep a bit. Thinking 9 am earliest.
Eagle Island Plan
Since it's Labor Day and most probably have the day off maybe we could show up earlier and enjoy the water while the temp is hot. I think this will be our plan:
Arrive at noon
Make a trip around the back clearing out goatheads
swim, eat and relax
Does that work for people?
Eagle Island Low Down
Tom, my family and the Connely family went out to Eagle Island Saturday to do some damage to the goatheads. Well, we were humbled. They are bad this year. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. I am going to try and get out there again this week and will announce when I am more sure of when. If you do go out there take a good size bucket or garbage can to load up the nasty beasts. We started from the west side and made it to just past the bridge. We walked up to the 180 degree turn and there were plenty of goathead plants up there as well.
Thorn Update
Hi Rob,
Thank you for the update. I got tied up with the holiday and all and by the time I was ready to head out, I figured it was too late. I am planning on going on there maybe this Thursday. Are the thorns still soft so we can get them before they mess everything up at least? That area on the other side with the dirt hill and 180 degree turn is always the bad place. Once you get by the lake edge, it usually isn't so bad. I am thinking about taking out some spray too, wondering if they would get mad at me if I did, or if I should just be sneaky.
Thorns Still Soft
Ya, the thorn are still soft but it looks like they might be dropping soon. Even now when you pick up the plants they are dropping some of their deadly booby traps. I thought about the same thing with the spray. If I were going to do it I think I would just go ahead and apologize later if need be. I probably can't get out there until Friday, so if you go out before then let us know what you find and any other info you think we should know.
Update
Harris and I went out to Eagle Island last friday for nearly two hours and cleared goathead bushes. WOW! There were a ton. While we have cleared just about every plant there are still some goatheads that have fallen. If any of you have an old set of mtn or cross tires you are going to throw away you may want to head out to around the bridge and 180 degree turn first and make several passes to gte rid of a few more of the deadly seeds. I know unintentional Arn got rid of several Friday evening after Harris and I left. Maybe we should thank him for his unintentional act of service:)
Update report
Wow, thank you guys. I was planning on going out on Thursday night this week. Wondering if we should take some shovels and scoop the first couple inches off the worst areas to see if that will help?
Great Idea
That is a good idea. I would hate to have to take off that section of the course but sometimes I wonder if that might be the best thing to do if we can't get it cleaned up.
