3 summit challenge preview

Here is the scoop on the 3 summit challenge route (my grade figures are just guestimates). First of all, the scenery is awesome and the road is very smooth. The first five miles are just slightly uphill, then there is about a one mile hill that isn't too steep. About mile twelve you hit the first climb which is about 4 1/2 miles at maybe 5-6% grade, then it's downhill to Warm Lake. After Warm Lake the fun begins. The next few miles are fairly flat before the 5 mile Landmark summit climb. The first mile of the climb is a fairly easy 5% before kicking up to around 11-12% for the next two miles. There is about 1/2 mile or so break where it drops down to around 7% before jumping back up to 10% or so. Basically, I was grinding out a whopping 4.5 - 6 mph up most of the hill (I am ordering a 27 tooth cassette before riding it again next weekend). It is probably the steepest sustained climb I've ever down (of course I've only ridden Galena, Bogus, Horseshoe Bend, Freeze out and Hill top). To make it more fun, we rode over the summit to where the pavement ends and then climbed back up the other side. The third climb back up out of Warm Lake was pretty much like the first climb, but it felt a lot harder after climbing Landmark. It was a great ride, but I thought I'd throw out a word of caution regarding that second climb.

Nice

That second climb sounds like a beast. Thanks for the report.

Grade

One of the guys I was riding with used Map My Ride and it said it was only 9%. I am curious to see what readings you guys get next weekend, because it sure felt steeper than that.

% Grades

OK, I dug into Uhl's file listed below and checked out the grades closer. That first little climb is 4.2% avg over the last steep section... it's really short though. The second climb averages 5.7% for over 4 miles. The beastly climb averages 8.7% for over 2 miles, then a slight reprieve back to 5.0% for 3/4mile, then back up to 8.7% for almost another 1.5 miles.

Time-wise... I can't tell how hard he was pushing but first climb 5mins, second 25mins, third 30mins.... not counting any of the semi-flat or slight uphill between climbs.

You're thinking alternate gearing???

Maybe I'll take my cross bike! :)

Gearing

Yup...I just ordered my new 12-27 cassette :)

Thanks Dave,

I was debating after my ride yesterday what gearing to use. The steepest areas I ran into were around 8-9% and the 25 was ok but after 3 or so hours it was getting tough. I think I will put on my 27T cassette after reading your review.

oh man.

maybe I shouldn't have read this. ;)

Motivation?!

And Deeble is trying to convince me to come along? Holy polka dots!

dave5oh's picture

No problem

It is easy enough to turn it into a 2 1/2 summit challenge if needed :-)

The route...

Searched around and found a log Uhl made last year of the route all the way to the end of pavement. What a monster of a ride... 8500' of climbing if you drop over the last one like that.

Just to be clear --

the 'official' route doesn't drop down the back of Warm Lake, right? Nate's earlier post of 6500' seemed like plenty to me!

nate's picture

Correct

Otherwise it would be called the 4 summit challenge ;)

Already put on a 27

In preparation I have been experimenting with a 27 this past week. I have determined that the scout motto to always be prepared is a good idea for this event.
I don't feel too bad, in the Vuelta a Espana there is a climb called the Alto de el Angliru with grades over 23%. Even some of the pros will use triple chain rings, and some are eventually reduced to walking. Now that's a climb!

I can't wait, it sounds like a fun event!

Fixie!

I am going to do it on a unicycle!
